Professor of Talmud
With expertise in Talmud, Rabbinical Responsa, and the writings of Israeli author S.Y. Agnon, Rabbi Daniel Bouskila teaches advanced courses to AJRCA rabbinical students. Rabbi Bouskila is the Director of the Sephardic Educational Center. He holds a BA in history from UCLA and Rabbinic Ordination from Yeshiva University in New York. He studied at the Hesder Yeshiva Kerem B’Yavneh in Israel for 2 years, served in the IDF’s Givati Infantry Brigade for 1 year during the first Lebanon War (1984-85), and studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem for 1 year. A Vice-President of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, Rabbi Bouskila also serves on the board of the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies. In 2007, he was given a special grant by the Board of Rabbis to study at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. In October 2009, Rabbi Bouskila was one of 18 leading LA Rabbis chosen by the Israeli Consul General to participate in the first-ever “Rabbi’s Unity Mission” to Israel. In February, 2010, at the age of 45, he retired as the Senior Rabbi of Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel in Westwood, CA, an 800 family congregation, where he served for the first 17 years of his career. He joined the Sephardic Educational Center in April, 2010. In addition, to his work at AJRCA and the SEC, Rabbi Bouskila also teaches a weekly seminar in Modern Jewish Thought to the senior class at YULA Girls School. He is a regular contributor to local and national newspapers (in both English and Hebrew), has penned over fifty newspaper columns on various Jewish issues, and has published an extensive commentary on the Passover Haggadah. He taught various courses at Shalhevet High School for 10 years, where he also (as a special hobby) coached the Girls Varsity Basketball team, leading them to 2 consecutive national tournament championships in Miami Beach, Florida. He maintains his own blog on various Jewish topics (http://rabbidanielbouskila.blogspot.com), and also publishes a weekly “Torah Thoughts” e-mail. Rabbi Bouskila’s love for Israel is apparent in not only his words but his actions. He has raised over two million dollars for various causes in Israel, and delivered the funds personally to those in need. In 2004, he was honored by the LA Israeli Community with the “Yekir Ha-Kehilla Ha-Yisraelit” (cherished friend of the Israeli Community) award. He continues to maintain close relations with some of Israel’s leading writers, politicians and social activists, and is a frequent commentator to the press on Israel’s social and political affairs. In 2008, at the SEC’s Ninth Los Angeles Sephardic Film Festival, Rabbi Bouskila received the Maimonides Leadership Award for his remarkable devotion to Israel and the Jewish People.
