With our 2025 Ordination-Graduation ceremony approaching, we are highlighting members of the graduating class. Click here to see all of the posts in this series.
Today we’re talking with Cantorial Ordinee Jenni Marie Asher.
“As a cantor, I look for connections to God and people through music. I love seeing people engage musically in ways they didn’t think that they could. I am humbled by the way that music touches people so deeply, and that I can be a part of that spiritual experience with them.”
– Jenni Asher
1) With the ceremony approaching, what emotions are you feeling?
Relief!!!! I have been in school for seven years. I’m excited to know what being a full time cantor will feel like. Looking forward to a new work-life balance.
2) What is one learning from your Academy experience that you will take with you after graduation?
Some subjects are easily understandable and some aren’t, even in a really niche field. Just depends on our unique makeup as people, how we study, and what we’re genuinely interested in.
3) Is there anything you learned at AJRCA that truly surprised you?
Jewish organizations and institutions seem to have similar issues and strengths.
4) If you could go back in time and tell your pre-AJRCA self one thing, what would that be?
I think I’d tell myself that being a cantor combines chaplaincy and music and to involve myself in chaplaincy earlier, because it is so fulfilling and I wish I’d gotten my chaplaincy certification concurrently with school.
Congratulations Jenni!

Jenni, I have watched in awe as you took the steps to becoming a cantor. You have a talent that is unmatched and a spirit made stronger by your connection to Torah and mitzvoth. May Hashem bless you my friend!
Mazal tov, Jenni! Such a wonderful accomplishment.
