INQUIRE TODAY

Time to Apply!

You’ve been thinking about this for quite some time.

Others see the leader in you. You see yourself as a passionate champion of Jewish tradition, seeking to expand your wisdom in an academically rigorous and spiritually grounded environment. The Academy for Jewish Religion California welcomes your application.

Here, you’ll engage in a profound educational experience that will broaden your intellectual and spiritual perspectives. You’ll develop the knowledge, skills, and insight to facilitate transformative experiences for spiritual seekers of all backgrounds.

Once you’ve decided that applying is the right next step, our Director of Admissions, Robin Federman, will guide you through the process.

Who We Welcome

We welcome applicants from across the full spectrum of Jewish life. The Academy does not define its students by past, current, or future affiliation. Our alumni — including those serving in denominational settings — work with families representing the many expressions of Judaism. The ability to see each person as an individual and a unique soul is foundational to professional effectiveness.

Students of the Academy come from a wide range of backgrounds, from those with years of professional experience or Jewish study to individuals embarking on midlife career changes. Our community includes teachers, physicians, executives, attorneys, parents, therapists, journalists, filmmakers, artists, and professionals from many other fields. We believe that individuals who bring successful careers and meaningful life experience to their studies can become exceptional rabbis, cantors, chaplains, educators, and Jewish professionals.

We also welcome those whose life journeys have taken them across diverse traditions and spiritual paths. These experiences enrich our community and strengthen our graduates’ ability to connect with people from many backgrounds.

The average age of an AJRCA student is in the mid-40s; our community, however, is distinctly multigenerational, with students ranging from their mid-20s to their late 70s. Each student brings a perspective shaped by their own journey, creating a dynamic and enriching classroom environment.

Application Requirements

For applicants to programs leading to ordination and certification:

Jewish status — Applicants must be Jewish by birth, as recognized by at least one major rabbinic body, or through a conversion process recognized by at least one major rabbinic body. The Academy admits students without regard to age, gender, disability, race, color, or national origin.

Bachelor’s degree — Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Those currently working toward a bachelor’s degree are welcome to inquire and, when appropriate, apply.

Psychological consultation — Applicants meet with an independent psychological consultant who provides feedback regarding their readiness to undertake the rigorous training required for spiritual leadership. The consultation report is confidential and available only to members of the Admissions Committee and the Academy’s Senior Administration.

Hebrew proficiency — Basic Hebrew proficiency is essential for serious Jewish study in all of our programs. If Hebrew is an area of concern, our Director of Admissions can connect you with Hebrew faculty–and, if necessary, a tutor–to support your preparation.

Hebrew Placement Test — As part of the admissions process, though not a condition of acceptance, candidates take a written Hebrew Placement Test and then meet with Hebrew faculty to determine their current language abilities. First-year rabbinical students are expected to enter the program at Level II. Tutors and Hebrew faculty work together to help applicants accelerate their preparation.

Judaic Studies — Each student’s proficiency in Judaic Studies will be assessed prior to their second year of study.

Master of Jewish Studies Applicants

The Academy currently recognizes five tracks of specialization: Jewish Values & Ethics, Communal Leadership, Creativity in Jewish Life, Sephardic Judaism, and Interfaith Relations. Known for its flexibility, the MJS program is designed to accommodate additional areas of specialization through Independent Studies. While Hebrew proficiency is a more modest requirement for MJS students, knowledge of Hebrew remains an integral part of Jewish Studies. A psychological consultation is not required for MJS applicants.

The Admissions Interview

Admissions decisions are made by an Admissions Committee composed of the Academy’s senior administration, faculty, and Director of Admissions. Interviews last approximately one hour, and questions are wide-ranging, often relating to the applicant’s essays, college transcripts, or other areas of interest to the Committee.

For Cantorial School applicants, the admissions process includes an audition. After consulting with the Dean of the Cantorial School, applicants prepare five pieces, from which the Committee selects three or four for performance. Selections should showcase the full range of vocal and interpretive abilities; at least three pieces should be drawn from Jewish repertoire–one that represents traditional cantorial style and another that reflects a more informal, personal preference.

Admissions Decisions

An applicant may be unconditionally accepted, accepted with conditions, or re-directed. If re-directed, guidance may be provided regarding the Admissions Committee’s decision and possible next steps, including the interval before a subsequent application would be considered. Acceptance to the Academy is valid until the beginning of the semester following the anniversary of the interview date.

Candidates receive the Admissions Committee’s decision within at most ten days of the interview.

Full details concerning application requirements are included within each program’s application materials. The Director of Admissions is available to offer general guidance and respond to candidates’ questions.
