Comprehensive Curriculum/Flexible Schedule
AJRCA’s Master of Jewish Studies is structured to accommodate the complexities of an adult professional’s life. Recognizing that today’s students juggle multiple responsibilities, all instruction for the MJS program is online. Community-building is an important part of the education and experience and so there are three residency periods scheduled throughout the academic year: Orientation at the start of fall semester, the Annual Student Retreat at the start of spring term, and Ordination/Graduation/Final Day of Learning at the end of the school year. This allows students, no matter where they live, to be able to participate in a rigorous academic program without relocating or giving up their professional responsibilities. A full-time student can complete the degree in less than two years, making it an efficient path to advancing one’s education and career simultaneously.

The MJS degree requires completion of 36 semester units, including a Hebrew language requirement of at least one year. The curriculum culminates in a capstone project or thesis, allowing students to explore deeply a topic of their choice that demonstrates their mastery of course materials and their ability to apply their knowledge in practical or theoretical contexts.

Specializations That Foster Leadership
What sets AJRCA’s program apart is its focus on creating leaders for the 21st century through specialized tracks that cater to a broad range of interests and professional goals for those working in a variety of settings, including synagogues, non-profit organizations, academic institutions and interfaith settings:

  • Jewish Values, Ethics, and Action: This track is designed for those who aim to bring Jewish ethical principles to bear on societal issues. It provides a foundation in classical biblical and rabbinic literature, along with contemporary Jewish ethics. Graduates often pursue roles as educators or consultants, applying their deep understanding of Jewish values in various communal and educational settings.
  • Music in Jewish Life: For those with a passion for music and its role in Jewish worship and community, this specialization focuses on the integration of music into Jewish cultural and spiritual expressions. This track prepares students to serve as music directors or educators in settings where music plays a pivotal role in enriching Jewish communal life.
  • Sephardic Studies: A unique aspect of AJRCA’s offerings, this track delves into the history, culture, and traditions of Sephardic communities. It is an excellent choice for students interested in exploring and preserving the heritage of a vital segment of the Jewish diaspora.

A Supportive Virtual Community

Despite its virtual format, AJRCA does not compromise on creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. The program is designed to foster a sense of community among students and faculty through interactive online classes, discussion forums, and group projects. Students also have opportunities to participate in virtual rituals and services, which reinforce their learning and spiritual growth.

As mentioned above, students come together three times each year, deepening their connection to one another, faculty and their studies.
