Q1) Where do you live?

I live in West Los Angeles, in the Beverlywood neighborhood.

Q2) What fills your time when you’re not teaching at AJRCA?

When not teaching at AJRCA, most of my week is devoted to the advancement of Jewish education, early childhood through high school, through my work as Executive Director of BJE: Builders of Jewish Education.  In advancing my own Jewish education – a continuing project — I have an abiding interest in Jewish history.  My research focuses on the encounter of Jews and Judaism with modernity, and I publish in that field on topics that I find particularly engaging.  My wife, Robin, and I are parents of three children and grandparents of two (very young) children, all of whom live in New York.  It follows that FaceTime is an important and welcome part of each week!

Q3) What is one thing about AJRCA that you a) enjoyed during the previous experience(s) with the Academy and b) are looking forward to as you return?

Over the decade during which I previously taught at AJRCA, the most enjoyable and memorable dimension of the experience was the students I encountered.  The opportunity of engaging with students of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and professional pursuits seeking both knowledge and meaning through Jewish study was quite remarkable and uplifting.  I would be remiss in not also noting that the faculty at AJRCA is diverse, congenial, and passionate about teaching those eager to learn.  I invariably learned from students as well as faculty each semester, and I look forward to doing so, again, in the new term.

Welcome Gil!
