At the Academy for Jewish Religion California (AJRCA), we believe that meaningful Jewish learning should be accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of today’s learners. In an increasingly digital and diverse world, online education offers powerful opportunities to reach students where they are—geographically, spiritually, and academically. Through our online synchronous course offerings, we are proud to serve a diverse spectrum of learners with programs designed to inspire personal growth, intellectual engagement, and community connection.
Our approach to online Jewish education is grounded in a commitment to both academic excellence and spiritual depth. We offer a robust selection of courses through our graduate programs, ordination tracks, and continuing education opportunities—each designed to support students across different life stages and learning goals.
A Digital Gateway to Jewish Learning
AJRCA’s online platform enables students to participate in live, interactive classes from across the country and around the world. These courses are led by experienced faculty—many of whom are both scholars and practitioners—who bring real-world context to Jewish texts, history, and traditions.
Our online format is structured to support dynamic learning communities. Live (synchronous) sessions allow for real-time discussion and relationship-building. It also enables students who are working professionals, parents, or living in areas without access to local Jewish educational institutions the opportunity to learn. (In general, we do not offer asynchronous learning)
The Intersection of Interest and Availability: Something for Everyone
AJRCA’s online offerings are as diverse as our student body. Whether one is pursuing a Master of Jewish Studies, preparing for ordination, or simply seeking personal enrichment, our courses are designed to meet a wide range of interests, knowledge and experience.
Graduate-Level Courses
As part of our Master of Jewish Studies (MJS) degree, students explore foundational areas such as:
- Torah and Rabbinic Literature
- Jewish Thought and Theology
- Jewish History and Civilization
- Liturgy and Practice
- Hebrew Language
These courses foster critical thinking, cultural literacy, and the ability to engage deeply with Jewish texts and traditions.
Professional Preparation
For students pursuing rabbinic, cantorial or chaplaincy ordination/certification, the course offerings at the Academy integrate spiritual formation and academic achievement with professional training. Coursework is complemented by mentorship, fieldwork, and spiritual direction—ensuring that professional development is as holistic as it is rigorous.
Continuing Education and Community Learners
We also welcome students who are not seeking a degree but want to deepen their understanding of Judaism. Many take courses for personal interest, professional development, or community leadership preparation. These learners often bring valuable life experience into our classrooms, enriching the learning environment for everyone.
Learning That Reflects Today’s Jewish World
AJRCA’s online curriculum reflects the pluralistic and evolving nature of contemporary Judaism. The classroom environment is dynamic with faculty encouraging students to engage with traditional texts while addressing modern ethical challenges, interfaith dialogue, spiritual practice, and social justice.
This inclusive approach attracts students from all denominations, movements and backgrounds—Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Renewal, and beyond. Together, they form a vibrant learning community that models the diversity of Jewish life and leadership today.
Technology That Supports Connection
While technology is the medium, connection is the goal. We’ve designed our online class environment to foster human interaction—between faculty and students, and among peers. Small class sizes encourage discussion, debate, and collaboration. Students meet regularly in breakout groups, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and virtual study partnerships, furthering their connection to the material – and one another.
In addition to their time dedicated to curriculum, students of the Academy come together during for virtual gatherings and community events that reinforce a shared sense of purpose and belonging. Even across distances, our students report feeling connected to one another and to the broader mission of Jewish learning and service.
A Pathway to Growth
Whether seeking knowledge for its own sake, preparation for service, or spiritual nourishment, students of the Academy are provided the tools and inspiration they need. The AJRCA curriculum extends beyond academic; it’s a portal for transformation, connection, and purpose.
