Becoming a rabbi is a profound journey that combines intellectual study, spiritual formation, and pastoral preparation. At the Academy for Jewish Religion California (AJRCA), we support each student’s personal and professional development as they take steps toward this sacred calling.
Step 1: Academic Readiness
Applicants hold at minimum a bachelor’s degree and demonstrate a strong foundation in Jewish learning and communal engagement. Pre-requisite courses, especially in remedial Hebrew, and suggested reading are often recommended to prepare students for the rigors of rabbinical study.
Step 2: Apply to and Enroll in the Rabbinical School of the Academy
The five-year program includes coursework in Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, halacha, pastoral counseling, Hebrew, homiletics, and Jewish history. The Academy emphasizes spiritual development through both coursework, real-life experience, and dynamic in-personl retreats.
Step 3: Participate in Practical Training
Supervised internships and pulpit experience provide students with hands-on training in teaching, lifecycle officiation, and pastoral care. Students learn to lead prayer services and provide spiritual guidance in diverse clinical settings.
Step 4: Complete Thesis and Final Evaluations
Students conclude their studies by completing a Master’s thesis and demonstrating readiness through evaluations and faculty review.
Step 5: Ordination and Career Placement
Graduates are ordained as “Rabbi and Teacher in Israel” and receive a Master’s Degree in Rabbinic Studies. They go on to serve in synagogues, schools, hospitals, and other communal institutions across the U.S. and beyond.
A Journey of Commitment and Transformation
Becoming a rabbi at AJRCA is more than academic achievement—it is a deeply transformative path of personal and communal significance. Our program nurtures the whole person, integrating tradition, innovation, and moral clarity. For those called to lead, the Academy provides the guidance, training, and community to fulfill that sacred mission.
